MTSN Suite: Comprehensive Multi-Port TSN Settings

The Multi-Port Time-Sensitive Network (MTSN) Switch IP is a SoC-e solution for any customer that needs an all-in-one solution to bring time-sensitive networking to their equipment.

Depending on the application, the MTSN switch IP can be optimally implemented and can be configured from simple 2-port TSN adapter generation to complex multi-port switches. The designer can choose the number of ports and memory allocation for the switch implemented in the FPGA part among other parameters. The entire configuration is done graphically using Xilinx Vivado tools.

The MTSN Switch IP can be evaluated using this MTSN kit, which is designed not only to test the MTSN Switch IP, but also to support advanced manual TSNs. it consists of two ready-to-use boards that run TSN network setup.

The kit is available in two versions, one based on the Xilinx Zynq Ultrascale + MPSoC and the other on the Zynq-7000 SoC (PCIe NIC version).

The following figure shows the design block diagram implemented on the MTSN kit (MPSoC version):

The main elements included in this design are:

PS Section:The processing system part of the SoC.
PL section:programmable logic part of the SoC.
TSN Traffic Generator:The HDL module is capable of generating different classes of Ethernet traffic with controlled throughput. In addition, it integrates a time-aware shaper for scheduling the regular Ethernet traffic generated by the traffic generator.
TSN Adapter: The HDL module, which is responsible for implementing a time-aware shaper to schedule the regular Ethernet traffic managed by the standard regular Ethernet MACs of the SoC processor part.
MTSN switch IP:Six-port TSN switch. These ports are distributed as two internal ports and four external ports.

The demo included in the kit is divided into several tests to test the effect of enabling and disabling TSN features (synchronization, shaper, etc.). The switch parameters for each configuration are visible and can be edited via a regular web browser. The following screenshot shows an example of this interface:

Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a new generation of network technology based on the evolution of the standard Ethernet architecture. It takes traditional Ethernet as the network foundation and provides a data link layer protocol specification for deterministic data transmission capability through mechanisms such as clock synchronization, data scheduling, and network configuration. Compared with traditional Ethernet, TSN can provide microsecond-level deterministic services, reduce the complexity of the entire communication network, and realize the convergence of information technology (IT) and operation technology (OT). With its precise clock synchronization, deterministic traffic scheduling, and intelligent and open operation and maintenance management framework, TSN can ensure the high-quality transmission of multiple business traffic in a common network, and it has both performance and cost advantages, and it is the development trend of the future network. This is the future trend of network development.

Currently, TSN technology has a high level of discussion in the automotive, industrial, rail transportation, and aerospace fields. As a non-vendor-bound real-time communication protocol, we believe that TSN technology has a good application prospect.
