Accelerating Real-Time Processing for Smart Grids with Xilinx Alveo Cards
SMV SubscriberBoard is an acceleration platform for processing a large number of Sample Measurement Values (SMV) for Smart Grid based on SoC-e SMV Subscriber IP and Xilinx Alveo hardware.


The gas pedal calculates all low-level network and DSP functions, thus providing high-level applications with all relevant information about the state of the grid parameters. Providing this information ensures fixed and short delays. Thus, it can be used not only for monitoring purposes, but also for control and automation applications within the scope of the IEC 61850 standard.
SMV SubscriberBoard can be installed on edge computing devices and local servers in the power infrastructure, e.g. in substations. In addition, the solution is useful in data centers of smart grid operators and electric utilities to monitor the detailed status of any measurement location.
The SMV SubscriberBoard must comply with SMV frame processing according to IEC 61850-9-2 with the following characteristics and properties.
- Hardware-accelerated DFT calculation module for calculating the amplitude and phase of a harmonic (50 or 60 Hz).
- Hardware-accelerated RMS calculation module (up to 162548 calculations/second per SMV Subscriber IP instance). Depending on the final Alveo board platform selected for the project, multiple SMV Subscriber IP instances can be realized.
- 40 synchronized SMV streams per SMV Subscriber IP instance: 8 digital channels per stream: 3-phase voltage plus ground, 3-phase current plus ground.
- SMV Subscriber IP has a latency of 6,152 µs, which can be optimized for simultaneous connection of multiple substations for the SMVSubscriber IP example via a low-latency SoC-e Ethernet switch IP (internally connected to the Alveo board).
- A complete calculation of the exact waiting time is 6,152 us.
- 1 x 1000 Ethernet link with maximum line speed per SMV Subscriber IP instance. The architecture allows internal 10G to be integrated into multiple 1G switches/split infrastructures to support multiple SMV Subscriber IP instances in parallel.
