Hardware Processing of Sampled Measured Frames

The IEC 61850-9-2 standard introduces the concept of a sampled measurement value (SMV or SV) process bus. The standard proposes to digitize current and voltage transformer (CT, PT) outputs and other signals at the source and then communicate with these devices using an Ethernet-based local area network (LAN).

 

Sampled values are transmitted as a high-speed data stream of dataset samples encoded as multicast Ethernet frames. The protocol uses a publisher/subscriber model where the publisher transmits unrecognized data to the subscriber. For example, in the IEC 61850-9-2 LE profile, the sampled values are published at a rate of 4000 frames per second for 50Hz grid frequencies and 4800 frames per second for 60Hz.

The SMVsubscriber analyzes the incoming traffic and detects IEC 61850-9-2 Sampled Measurement Value (SMV) frames. Processes selected SMV frames according to several configuration parameters, extracting current and voltage sample values for four phases (A, B, C, and N).The IP uses these sample values to perform a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) calculation to obtain the angle and magnitude of each phase as well as the Root Mean Square (RMS). It also provides user-defined extraction rates for the samples.

  • High-performance RMS calculation module (up to 1562500 calculations/second)
  • Supports up to 128 concurrent SMV streams (up to 320 streams, depending on process window configuration)
  • Waiting time for the complete calculation of the 6us certainty
  • Status, Configuration and Statistics Counter Registers
  • 1000 Mbps AXI-Stream interface for seamless on-chip communication and combination with SoC-e network IP (HSR/PRP, Ethernet, TSN)

  • Maximum number of data streams supported

  • Extraction rate of RAW SMV frames sent to advanced software applications
  • Sample processing rate and window for adjusting the frequency of each stream for calculating DFT and RMS
